Rushing through passport control I could only think of getting relief ASAP, while the very kind lady at the till tried finding out how long was my stay in the Netherlands going to last.
I was finally able to get through passport control and find a toilet, by this time I was nearly sweating, all my self control focused on making it to the urinal. And just as I was about to get relief I saw it... A FLY????
And having tried it ourselves, we can assure you this is one of the simplest, cheap, efficient and elegant nudges we´ve ever seen, and a great way to tackle a very common problem faced by every public toilet in the world.
Because let´s face it, men just can´t aim properly when rushing to barely make it to the toilet.
“Guys are simple-minded and love to play with their urine stream, so you put something in the toilet bowl and they’ll aim at that,” says Aad Kieboom who decided to try this nudge during the 90´s and has seen an 80% reduction in spillage in the men´s toilets which then translates into an 8% cost reduction in the overall toilet cleaning bill. Which, considering the size of Schiphol should be a considerable amount.
This is an elegant nudge that embodies what a proper nudge must be, a simple yet effective change generator which delivers results without putting any stress on the users.
Some people have taken this nudge to the extreme as it´s been the case in Louisville University, where they´ve substituted the fly for the rival Kentucky´s University logo in the men´s football facilities toilets.
What do you think of it?
